Intro to Matter

Unit 1

TermDefinition
matter anything that has mass and takes up space
energy the ability to do work
mixtures a sample that consists of multiple substances
pure substances a material that is composed of only one type of substance
elements Any material that cannot be broken down into simpler materials by chemical means.
compounds a substance formed when two or more elements are chemically bonded together
chemical formula symbols and numbers used to represent the presence of elements in a compound
heterogeneous Mixture any mixture that is not uniform in composition
homogeneous Mixture a mixture that is uniform in composition throughout
chemistry the study of matter
molecule a group of atoms bonded together in a fixed proportion
phases of matter matter exists in four phases solid, liquid, gas or plasma
solid a phase of matter where the molecules vibrate in place and has a fixed shape and volume
liquid a phase of matter where the molecules move at a medium rate and takes the shape of the container while maintaining a fixed volume
plasma an ionized gas consisting of positive ions and free electrons
gas a phase of matter where the molecules move rapidly and takes the shape and volume of the container
phase changes changes from one phase to another (i.e. solid to liquid)
temperature the measure of the average kinetic motion of molecules
kinetic molecular theory a theory stating that temperature and phase is the result of the motion of atoms
kinetic energy energy of motion
potential energy stored energy
melting phase change from solid to liquid
freezing phase change from liquid to solid
sublimation phase change from solid to gas
condensation phase change from gas to liquid
evaporation (vaporization) phase change from liquid to gas
atoms the basic unit of matter
periodic table a table of elements arranged into columns and rows
deposition phase change from gas to solid
alloys mixtures of different types of metals
