atom The smallest particle of an element that still has properties of that element.
biochemical compound A carbon-based compound that is found in living organisms.
biochemical reaction Chemical reactions that take place inside living things.
carbohydrates Biochemical compounds that include sugar, starch, glycogen, and cellulose.
cellulose A complex carbohydrate found in the plants that is a polymer of glucose.
chemical bond The sharing of electrons between atoms.
chemical reaction A process in which some substances change chemically into different substances.
compound A unique type of matter in which 2 or more elements are combined chemically in a certain ratio.
element A pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances
enzyme Proteins that increase the rate of biochemical reactions.
lipids Biochemical compounds that living things use to store energy and make cell membranes.
matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
metabolism The sum of all of the biochemical reactions in an organism.
molecule Consists of 2 or more atoms. The smallest particle of a compound that still has the properties of that compound.
nucleic acids Biochemical compounds that include RNA and DNA.
proteins biochemical compounds that consist of 1 or more chains of small molecules called amino acids.
