Chapter 11 vocabulary - 5th grade

prism A solid figure that has two congruent, parallel polygons as its bases. Its sides are parallelograms.
pyramid A solid shape with a polygon as a base and triangular faces that come to a point (vertex or apex)
vertex A point where two or more straight lines meet.
edge The line segment where two faces of a solid figure meet.
lateral face any face that is not a base
face A flat surface on a solid figure.
polyhedron a three-dimensional figure whose surfaces are polygons
volume the amount of space a solid figure takes up
unit cube a cube that has a length, width, and height of 1 unit
pentagonal pyramid a three-dimensional figure with a base of 5 sides and triangular faces
hexagonal prism a three-dimensional figure with two bases of 6 sides and 6 rectangular faces
three-dimensional figure a solid figure that has length, width, and height
triangular pyramid a three-dimensional figure with a base of 3 sides and triangular faces
hexagonal pyramid a three-dimensional figure with a base of 6 sides and triangular faces
