Chapter 9 vocabulary - 5th grade

TermDefinition
coordinate grid a grid formed by a horizontal line called the x-axis and the vertical line called y-axis
horizontal running from side to side
vertical straight up and down
x-axis the horizontal line on a graph
y-axis the vertical line on a graph
x-coordinate The first number in an ordered pair; it tells the distance to move right or left on an origin
y-coordinate The second number in an ordered pair; it tells the distance to move up or down from the origin
origin the point (0,0) where the x-axis and the y-axis intersect in a coordinate plane
data information collected about people or things, often to draw conclusions about them
line graph A graph that uses line segments to show changes that occur over time
ordered pair A pair of numbers that can be used to locate a point on a coordinate plane
line plot a graph that shows the frequency of data along a number line
interval the difference between two numbers on the scale of a graph
scale a series of numbers placed at fixed distances on a graph
bar graph A graph that uses horizontal or vertical bars to display data and show comparisons among two or more items
