Chapter 4 vocabulary - 5th grade

| place value | the location of a digit in a number |
| factor | a number that is multiplied by another number to find a product |
| product | the answer to a multiplication problem |
| expanded form | a way to write numbers that shows the value of each digit |
| standard form | a common way to write numbers using digits |
| word form | a number written in words |
| powers of 10 | the numbers 10; 100; 1,000 and so on; can be written as a base of 10 and an exponent |
| 0.1 | one tenth; 1/10 |
| 0.01 | one hundredth; 1/100 |
| 0.001 | one thousandth; 1/1000 |
| whole number | numbers that don't have a decimal or fractional part |
| distributive property | A way to write lets you multiply a sum by multiplying each addend separately and then add the products. Ex: 5 x (4+2) = (5 x 4) + (5 x 2) |
