Evaluate To find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression: solve 16 - 7 = 9
product The answer to a multiplication problem. 8 x 6 = 48
order of operations A special set of rules which gives the order in which calculations are done in an expression. (PEMDAS)
period Each group of three digits separated by commas in a multi-digit number. 193,260,458 - The digits 260 are in the thousands period.
distributive property 8 x 17 = 8 x (12 + 5) = (8 x 12) + (8 x 5) 4 x 89 = 4 x ( 80 + 9) = (4 x 80) + (4 x 9)
expression A mathematical phrase or number sentence that includes numbers, operation signs and sometimes variable, but does not have an equal sign. ex. 7 boys and 5 girls each received 6 pieces of candy - 6 x (7 + 5)
place value The value of each digit in a number based on a location of the digit. 32,984 - The 2 is in the thousands place.
whole number A number without a decimal or fractional part of a number. 15 in the number 15.32
associative property 4 x (2 x 3) = (4 x 2) x 3; (3 + 5) + 7 = 3 + (5 + 7)
identity property 4 + 0 = 4; 6 x 1 = 6
commutative property 3 + 2 = 2 + 3
inverse operations Operations that undo each other; opposite operations
base A number used as a repeated factor; used with an exponent
Exponent A number that shows how many times the base is used as a repeated factor
