equation | A mathematical sentence that shows that two expressions are equal; this will always have an = sign. |

variable | A symbol, which is usually a letter, that is used to represent a number |

coefficient | the numerical factor of a term that contains a variable |

constant | a term without a variable |

term | Each part of an algebraic expression, separated by a + or - sign |

algebraic expression | A combination of variables, numbers, and at least one operation |

inequality | A mathematical sentence indicating that two quantities are not equal |

distributive property | To multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside the parenthesis |

equation | The statement 15 + 8y= 31 is an example of this. |
