skirmish fight between small units such as companies
battle fight between 1,000's of men; there are many battles in a war
war many battles with a final outcome or winner

strategy overall planning of what needs to be captured or accomplished in order to win a war
tactics deciding the specific movements of men and war materials during a battle (who is going to do what)
flank an attack around the ends of an enemy's line of battle
infantry troops that fought or moved on foot
artillery the part of an army armed with large guns - like cannons
cavalry in the past soldiers who fought on horseback
company smallest unit; around 100 soldiers, led by a captain
regiment 8-10 companies; around 800-1000 soldiers; led by a colonel
brigade 2 - 5 regiments; around 2600 soldiers; led by a brigadier general
division 2-4 brigades; around 8000 soldiers; led by a major general
corps 2-3 divisions; around 26,000 soldiers; led by a major general
