Abruptio Placentae Disorder in which the placenta separates from the uterine wall before the birth of the fetus
Amenorrhea Abnormal absence of menstrual periods for 90 days or more
Andropause decrease of the male hormone testosterone
APGAR Scale of 1 to 10 to evaluate a newborn infant’s physical status
Azoospermia Absence of sperm in the semen
Cervical Dysplasia Presence of precancerous changes in the cells that make up the inner lining of the cervix
Chlamydia Caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis and is the most commonly reported STD in the US. Can damage the reproductive organs with women and cause infertility. In males it can cause urethritis.
Circumcision Surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis
Eclampsia More serious form of preeclampsia characterized by convulsions and sometimes coma
Fibrocystic Breast Disease Presence of single or multiple benign cysts in the breasts
Galactorrhea Production of breast milk in a woman who is not breastfeeding
Gonorrhea Highly contagious condition caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. With males it affects the urethra and causes painful urination and abnormal discharge. With women it can affect the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes.
Gynecologist Physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders of the female reproductive system
Lochia Postpartum vaginal discharge that typically continues for 4 to 6 weeks after childbirth
Mastalgia Pain in the breast
Menarche beginning of the menstrual function
Neonate A baby in the first 4 weeks after birth
Nulligravida A woman who has never been pregnant
Nullipara A woman who has never born a viable child
Obstetrician Physician who specializes in providing medical care to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and immediately after
Oligomenorrhea Infrequent or very light menstruation in a woman with previously normal periods
Oophorectomy Surgical removal of one or both ovaries
Orchidectomy Surgical removal of one or both testicles
Orchiopexy Repair of an undescended testicle
Placenta Previa Abnormal implantation of the placenta in the lower portion of the uterus
Premature Menopause Ovaries cease functioning before age 40 years due to disease, hormonal disorder, or surgical removal
Salpingitis Inflammation of a fallopian tube
Salpingo-Oophorectomy Surgical removal of a fallopian tube and ovary
Syphilis Caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, and has symptoms that make it hard to distinguish from other STD’s. It’s highly contagious and spread due to contact with chancre which is a sore caused by syphilis.
Total Hysterectomy Surgical removal of the uterus and cervix
