Physical Properties of Matter

Matter Anything that is made of atoms and has mass and volume.
Physical Property A characteristic that you can observe without changing or trying to change the composition of the substance.
Chemical Property A characteristic that cannot be observed without altering the substance. The ability of a substance to undergo a change that alters its identity.
Mass A measurement of how much matter is in an object.
Weight A measurement of force. Depends on the mass of the object and on gravity.
Volume The amount of space an object occupies.
Density Measures the amount of mass in a given volume.
Solubility The ability to dissolve
Melting Point The temperature at which a solid changes into a liquid.
Boiling Point The temperature at which a liquid changes into a gas.
Magnetic The ability of material to a attract iron toward them.
Relative Density floating or sinking compared (relative) to water
Freezing Point The temperature at which a liquid begins changing into a solid
Classify To arrange in groups based on common properties
System a collection of interdependent cycles, structures, and / or processes
Models physical, conceptual, or mathematical representations of a real phenomenon that is difficult to observe directly
Diagram A kind of drawing that shows the parts of an object or the steps in a process
State of Matter A physical property that describes matter as a solid, liquid, or gas.
Conductor A material's ability to allow heat or electricity to flow easily.
Insulator A material's ability to reduce or block the flow of heat or electricity.
