BIOLOGY - 2

Cell Organelles - structure and function

QuestionAnswer
What is the structure of the nucleus? Large, dark staining, spherical structure
What is the function of the nucleus? Contains to chromosomes composed of DNA and protein
What is the location of the nucleus? In the cytosol of the cell
What is the structure of the nucleolus? Large black dot, small dense body, made of protein and nucleic acid
What is the function of the Nucleolus? Make parts to form ribosomes
What is the location of the Nucleolus? In the nucleus of the cell
What is the structure of the Cell Membrane? A double layer of phospholipids
What is the function of the Cell membrane? Encloses the cell contents, helps to maintain shape, helps movement in and out
What is the location of the Cell membrane? On the outside of the cell, it surrounds it
What is the structure of the cytosol? Water type substance
What is the function of the cytosol? Suspends organelles, is the location of some chemical reactions
What is the location of the cytosol? Within cell membrane
What is the structure of the Rough endoplasmic reticulum? (RER) a network of membranes creating channels that extend throughout the cytoplasm. Studded with ribosomes and provides pipelines between the nucleus and cytoplasm
What is the function of the RER Manufactures, processes and transports proteins. Parts pinch off to become vesicles for the transport of proteins to the membrane
What is the location in the RER? Connected to the nuclear membrane
What is the structure of ribosomes? Small spherical bodies composed of RNA and proteins, only visible with electron microscopes.
What is the function of Ribosomes? Makes proteins
What is the location of Ribosomes? Attached to the RER or free in cytosol
What is the structure of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum? (SER) A network of membranes, creating channels that extend throughout the cytoplasm
What is the function of the SER Is involved with the production of fats, steriods, and detox of drugs and poisons
What is the location of the SER? Attached to the RER
What is the structure of the Golgi Apparatus? (Golgi body) Is a stack of flat membrane sacs
What is the function of the Golgi Apparatus? Transporting, modifying and packaging of proteins and lipids into containers called vesicles for delivery
What is the location of the Golgi Apparatus? Near the endoplasmic reticulum
What is the structure of the mitchocondria? Have 2 membranes, outer and inner
What is the function of the mitchcondria? Releases energy for use by the cell
What is the location of the mitchocondia? In the cytosol
What is the structure of the Plastids? Easily visible using a light microscope. Surrounded by double membrane
What is the function of the Plastids? Photosynthesis, absorbs light energy
What is the location of the Plastids? Cytosolof cells of the green parts of plants
What is the structure of the Vacuole? Are membrane bound liquid filled spaces. Large in plant cells and small in animal cells
What is the function of the Vacuole? Provide physical support and storage. The vacuole of plant cells often expand to occupy 90% of cell volume
What is the location of the Vacuole? Cytosol of plants and animal cells
What is the structure of the Cell wall? Not an organelle, is on the outside of the cell membrane, composed of cellulose
What is the function of the Cell wall? Provides support, defines the shape of the cell, prevents expansion of the cell, allows water and substance to pass through freely.
What is the location of the Cell wall? Outside the cell membrane in the plant cells.
