Unit 3, Set 1 Vocabulary Springboard

Additive Identity Property A number that can be added to any number without changing its value.
Algebraic Expression A mathematical phrase that uses numbers, variables , or both with operations.
Associative Property When three or more number are being added, you can regroup using parenthesis and have the same outcome. Can also be used with multiplication.
Coefficient A number that multiplies a variable.
Commutative Property The order of the numbers being added or multiplied can be changed and outcome will still be the same.
Distributive Property The result of multiplying a number by the sum of two numbers is the same as the result of multiplying each addend by the number.
Equation A statement showing that two numbers or expressions are equal, using the equal sign.
Multiplicative Identity Property The number that can be multiplied by any number without changing its value.
Numerical Expression A mathematical phrase that uses number or numbers with operations.
Order of Operations A set of rules (or steps) for evaluating expressions with more than one operations.
Solution The value or values of a variable that make an equation true.
Term Part of an expression containing a number, a variable or both.
Variable A letter or symbol used in place of an unknown quantity/quantities in an expression or equation.
