Unit 3 Vocab


Commutative Property The order in which number s are added or multiplied does not change the sum or product
Associative Property The way in which numbers are grouped does not change their sum or product
Identity Property Properties that state that the sum of a number and 0 equals that number (Ex: 19 + 0 =10 ), and the product of any number and 1 equals the number (25 x 1 = 25).
Distributive Property To multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside the parentheses Ex: 5(6 +2) = 30 + 10
Exponent The number of times a base is used as a factor, another name for "power"
Base In a power, it is the number used as a factor
Squared Another way of saying a base is multiplied to the second power
Cubed Another way of saying a base is multiplied to the third power
Variable A symbol or a letter used to represent a number
Coefficient The numerical factor of a term that contains a variable, ex: the 6 and the 3 in the expression 6x +3y
Constant A term without a variable
