Ecosystems & Interactions

environment All the living and nonliving things that surround and affect an organism.
ecosystem A community of organisms and the physical environment in which they live.
population All the organisms of the same kind that live together in an ecosystem.
habitat The place where an organism lives and can find everything it needs to survive.
community All the populations of organisms that live and interact in an area.
producer A living thing, such as a plant, that can make its own food.
consumer A living thing that cannot make its own food and must eat other living things.
photosynthesis The process in which plants use energy from the sun to change carbon dioxide and water into sugar and oxygen.
decomposer A living thing that gets energy by breaking down dead organisms and animal wastes.
food chain A series of organisms that depend on one another for food.
