Unit 6 Vocab


Volume The measure of space taken up by the solid. The amount of "stuff" needed to FILL the solid.
Surface Area The sum of the areas of all the surfaces. The amount of "stuff" needed to WRAP the solid.
Area The number of square units needed to cover one surface of an object.
Faces The sides of an object.
Edges The points where the faces of an object meet.
Vertices The points where the corners of faces meet.
Rectangular Prism A solid, 3-dimensional figure with opposite sides parallel. The prism has 6 faces (sides) which are rectangular. This figure looks like a box.
Cylinder A solid, 3-dimensional figure with 2 congruent (equal) circles as bases. This figure looks like a tube or a can.
Pi The ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. The circumference of any circle divided by its diameter. We use 3.14
Circumference The distance around the outside of a circle.
Radius The distance from the center of a circle to any point on the circle.
Diameter The distance across the circle through the center of the circle.
Net A pattern you can cut and fold to make a model of a solid shape.
Hold, Capacity, Fill Other words that indicate VOLUME.
Wrap, Cover, Enclose Other words that indicate SURFACE AREA
