### Expressions and Properties

Term | Definition |

Commutative Property | Changing the ORDER of the numbers does not change the answer. |

Associative Property | REGROUPING the numbers does not change the answer. |

Inverse Property for Addition | The sum of a number and its inverse (opposite) equals zero. |

Inverse Property for Multiplication | The product of a number and its inverse (reciprocal) equals one. |

Identity Property for Addition | The sum of any number and zero is equal to the same number. |

Identity Property for Multiplication | The product of any number and one is equal to the same number. |

Distributive Property | The "sharing" property. |

Multiplicative Property of Zero | The product of a number and zero equals zero. |

Variables | A placeholder or a letter representing a number. |

Algebraic Form | Expressions or equations which contain as least one variable. |

Numeric Form | Expressions or equations which contain only numbers. |

Expression | A math sentence containing variables, numbers, and at least one operation. An expression does NOT have an equal sign. |

Equation | A math sentence containing variables, numbers, operations, and DOES HAVE an equal sign. |

Simplify | To make less complex or to write in a more simple form. |

Evaluate or Solve | To find an answer or solution to a problem. To find the value of a problem. |

Exponent | Tells us how many times the base is multiplied by itself. |

Translate | To write verbal phrases as expressions or equations |

Operations | The procedures we use to work with numbers. (Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide) |

Verbal Phrase | A math sentence or phrase which is translated into an expression or equation. |
