What is the Reproductive System? A collection of organs that work together to produce offspring by sexual reproduction
What is Sexual reproduction? It produces offspring by combining the genetic material of more than one parent.
What is the benefit of sexual reproduction? Genetic Variation
What is the egg? It is the sex cell produced by the female parent. It is produced by Meiosis and contains half the number of chromosomes as a body cell.
What is sperm? It is the sex cell produced by the male parent. It is produced by Meiosis and contains half the number of chromosomes as a body cell.
What is a zygote? It is created when the sperm's nucleus and the egg's nucleus are joined.
What is fertilization? The process of joining the sperm and egg (internal or external)
What are testes? Organs that make sperm and testosterone (hormone)
What is the epididymis? The tube that stores sperm and testosterone
What is the Vas deferens? The tube that carries the sperm from the epididymis to the body.
What is semen? A mixture of sperm and fluid from the glands
What are ovaries? Organs that produce eggs and estrogen (hormone)
What are fallopian tubes? The tube that leads the egg from the ovaries to the uterus
What is the uterus? The organ where a baby grows and develops
Explain multiple births. Identical twins occur when one zygote is split. Fraternal twins occur when there are two eggs and two sperm.
What is an ectopic pregnancy? It is when a fertilized egg attaches itself to the fallopian tube or some other part of the female reproductive system (other than the uterus)
What is the placenta? It is a two way exchange organ that allows blood, oxygen, nutrients and waste to go between the mother and baby.
What is a fetus? It is an 8 week old embryo
