DNA deoxyribonucleic acid - carries codes for all genes and proteins
nucleotide building blocks of DNA, composed of phosphate group, (deoxy)ribose sugar, and nitrogenous base
double helix Twisted ladder shape of a DNA molecule
DNA replication the process of copying a strand of DNA
protein synthesis the process of making proteins
mRNA messenger RNA, carries DNA code from the nucleus, though the cytoplasm, to the ribosome
ribosome organelle where proteins are made
tRNA transfer RNA; small pieces of RNA that carry amino acids to the ribosome and add them to the growing protein chain
peptide bond special bonds that hold amino acids together
transcription process of making an mRNA copy of the DNA code (happens in the nucleus)
translation process of converting the mRNA copy into a specific sequence of amino acids and creating a protein
rRNA ribosomal RNA; RNA that makes up the ribosome
Uracil (U) Nitrogenous base that's only present in RNA; pairs with A
Thymine (T) Nitrogenous base that's only present in DNA; pairs with A
Guanine (G) Nitrogenous base that's present in both DNA and RNA. Pairs with C (cytosine)
Cytosine (C) Nitrogenous base that's present in both DNA and RNA. Pairs with G (guanine)
Adenine (A) Nitrogenous base that's present in both DNA and RNA. Pairs with T (thymine) in DNA and U (uracil) in RNA.
