Electromagnetic Waves

electromagnetic wave a wave that can travel through empty space or through matter and is produced by charged particles that are in motion
radiant energy the type of energy carried by an electromagnetic wave
electromagnetic spectrum the wide range of electromagnetic waves with different frequencies and wavelengths
radio wave waves with the lowest frequency of all the electromagnetic waves
infrared wave waves given off by almost every object; humans sense as heat
visible light waves detectable by human eyes
ultraviolet radiation higher frequency than visible light and carries more energy; these can cause sunburn
X-ray waves that can penetrate skin and muscle, but can be stopped by lead shields
gamma ray waves with the highest frequency and the most penetrating power
Global Positioning System a system of satellites, ground-based stations, and mobile devices that can be used to locate objects on Earth
carrier wave the radio waves broadcast by a station at its assigned frequency
