Snail Mail The ordinary postal system (letters).
IP Address A unique string of numbers separated by periods that identifies each computer using the Internet Protocol to communicate over a network.
Message Delivery Transfer (MTA) Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is an Internet standard for electronic mail (e-mail) transmission across Internet Protocol (IP) networks.
Mail Delivery Agent (MDA) A mail delivery agent or message delivery agent is a computer software component that is responsible for the delivery of e-mail messages to a local recipient's mailbox.
User Name A user is an agent, either a human agent or software agent, who uses a computer or network service.
Email Client A program that is independent of any specific browser, and you can send email message.
Mail User Agent (MUA) A messaging component used as a standalone application by the user.
Browser Email Programs come bundled with a Web browser which can be integrated.
Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) Allows users to exchange various types of data files over the Internet.
Header Contain information to help identify the content.
Secure MIME (S/MIME) Version of MIME protocol that provides a secure method of sending e-mail.
Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) Uses non-patented encryption algorithms.
GNU Privacy Guard Used for encrypting and decrypting email messages that does not use patent algorithms.
Attachment an extension such as a picture, video, etc.
Emoticon A representation of a facial expression.
Spam Irrelevant or inappropriate messages sent on the Internet to a large number of recipients.
Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart (CAPTCHA) A program or system intended to distinguish human from machine input, typically as a way of thwarting spam and automated extraction of data from websites.
Blackhole List A publicized list, usually commercial, of IP addresses known to be sources of spam.
Spam Filter Email filtering is the processing of email to organize it according to specified criteria.
Personal Information Management (PIM) A type of software application designed to help users organize random bits of information.
Personal Digital Assistance (PDA) A palmtop computer that functions as a personal organizer but also provides e-mail and Internet access.
