ABC's A mnemonic for assessing status of emergency patients: Airway, Breathing and Circulation.
Atelectasis Collapse of the lung tissue.
Biologic Death Results from permanent cellular damage caused by lack of oxygen.
Brain Death An irreversible form of unconsciousness characterized by a complete loss of brain function while the heart continues to beat.
Cardiac Arrest Sudden cessation of functional circulation is confirmed.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Basic emergency procedure for life support.
Clinical Death Heartbeat and respiration have ceased.
Contusion An injury that does not break the skin, is caused by a blow, and is characterized by edema, discoloration, and pain.
Crepitus A grating sound, caused by the broken bones scraping against each other.
Cyanosis Slightly bluish, grayish, slatelike, or dark purple discoloration of the skin, especially of the lips and nailbeds.
Ecchymosis Discoloration of an area of the skin or mucous membrane caused by the extravasation of blood into the subcutaneous tissues, also called a bruise.
Embolism Abnormal circulatory condition in which an embolus (blood clot) travels through the bloodstream and becomes lodged in a blood vessel.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) A national network of services coordinated to provide aid and medical assistance from primary response until definitive care can be obtained.

Epistaxis Digitorum Self-inflicted local digital trauma from nose picking
Flair Chest Two or more ribs fractured in two or more spaces.
Good Samaritan Laws Legal stipulation for protection of those who give first aid in an emergency situation.
Heimlich Maneuver An emergency procedure for dislodging a bolus of food or other obstruction from the trachea to prevent asphyxiation, recommended for relieving foreign body airway obstruction.
Hematemesis Vomiting blood.
Hematuria Blood in the urine.
Hemoptysis Expectorating blood from the respiratory tract.
Hemothorax Collection of blood into the pleural space.
Melena Dark tarry stool containing digested blood.
Oluguria Diminished amount of urine formation, less than 500 mL in every 24 hours.
Pleural Space The space between the visceral and parietal layers of the pleurae.
Pneumothorax The collection of air or gas in the pleural space, causing the lungs to collapse.
Shock An abnormal condition of inadequate blood flow to the body's peripheral tissues, with life-threatening cellular dysfunction, hypotension, and oliguria.
Stridor Harsh sound during respirations, high-pitched and resembling the blowing of wind, caused by obstruction of the air passage. Victim may become unconscious.
Tachycardia Rapid heart beat, more than 100 beats per minutes.
Tetanus Toxoid An active immunizing agent prepared from detoxified tetanus toxin that produces an antigenic response in the body, conferring permanent immunity to tetanus infection.
Triage Process of classifying a group of patients as to the severity of injury and need of care.
