Amount of matter contained in a substance. mass
An example of something that is not matter. Forms of this are light, heat, and sound. energy
Anything that has mass and volume. matter
The amount of energy needed to raise one gram of a substance by one degree Celsius. specific heat
The substance being dissolved when a solution is created. solute
The ability to dissolve in another substance. solubility
Mass per unit volume. density
A characteristic of a substance that can be observed. property
Amount of space an object occupies. volume
The substance that is "doing the dissolving" when a solution is created. solvent
The three main physical states of matter are: solid, liquid, and gas
