Chemistry unit 1
Term | Definition |
---|---|
A mixture | two or more substances not chemically joined |
An element | made up of only its own atoms and it cannot be broken down into any other substance |
A compound | two or more substances that are chemically joined |
Neutrons | neutral charge, no charge |
Electrons | negative charge |
Shells | the paths in which electrons move |
Name 3 subatomic particles | protons, neutrons and electrons |
2........ atoms will have ....... amounts of protons, neutrons and electrons | different x2 |
Proton number | amount of protons |
What is the smallest particle? | An atom |
How many elements are there approximately in the periodic table? | 100 |
Malleable | can be hammered or pressed into shape without breaking or cracking |
Sonorous | capable of giving out a deep resonant sound |
Density | how much of the substance occupies a specific volume |
Ductile | able to be deformed without losing toughness |
Typical metal properties | conductor of electricity, good conductor of heat, shiny, high density, malleable, sonorous |
Typical non metal(solid) properties | insulator, poor conductor of heat, dull, low density, brittle, not sonorous |
Name 4 metals | zinc, aluminium, iron, copper Non metals |
Main difference between ductile and malleable | ductile reverts back to its original shape, malleable stays in the new bent shape |
Protons | Positive charge |
What is a period | across |
What is a group | down |
Group 1 | the alkali metals |
Group 2 the alkali earth metals | |
Group 7 | the halogens |
Group 8/0/18 | the noble gases |
Group 1 elements reaction to water | fizzing, smoke, flames |
With the halogens, the colour..... as you go down | darkens |
With the halogens, reactivity.........as you go down | increases |
Displacement reaction | when one material replaces another |
What are the 2 rules of displacement reactions? | the one that displaces will replace each other if they are in the same group |
