Battle of Midway | An important turning point in the WWII Pacific campaign, the victory over Japan and the significant damage to their navy allowed the United States and its allies to move into an offensive position |
the Bataan Death March | April 1942, American and Filipino forces were forced to walk 65 miles to Japanese prison camps after the fall of the Philippines. Thousands died due to harsh treatment from the Japanese. |
the invasion of Normandy | D-Day, June 6, 1944 when Allied troops crossed the English Channel and opened a second front in Europe which led to the liberation of France in WWII. |
Berlin airlift | 1948 response to a Soviet land blockade of Berlin where the US supplied 2 million Berliners by air. This effort made the blockade ineffective and forced Stalin to lift the blockade. |
Cuban Missile Crisis | A 1962 event which almost resulted in nuclear war between the US and the USSR when Nikita Khrushchev secretly deployed nuclear weapons to Cuba. Khrushchev and President John F. Kennedy agreed to pull their nukes out of Cuba and Turkey respectively. |
arms race | A contest between the Soviet Union and the United States to have the largest, most powerful, most mobile nuclear arsenal. |
Korean War | Jun 25, 1950 – Jul 27, 1953; US intervenes via United Nations action rather than traditional declaration of war. |
Vietnam War | Nov 1, 1955 – Apr 30, 1975; US exit 1973; first war lost for the US |
Tet Offensive | January 1968, turning point in the Vietnam War |
the fall of Saigon | April 1975, the end of the Vietnam War |
Camp David Accords | Agreements between Israel and Egypt signed in 1978 that led in the following year to a peace treaty between those two countries, the first such treaty between Israel and any of its Arab neighbors. Brokered by U.S. Pres. Jimmy Carter. |
Iran-Contra Affair | was a political scandal during the Reagan Administration. The administration secretly facilitated the sale of arms to Iran (under an arms embargo), the profits from the sale were then used to fund the Contras which had been prohibited by Congress. |
Iran Hostage Crisis | a diplomatic standoff between Iran and the United States when 52 American diplomats and citizens were held hostage for 444 days from November 4, 1979, to January 20, 1981, after a group of Iranian students took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. |
Persian Gulf War | Operation Desert Storm; The American and coalition military offensive against Iraq in 1991 which liberated Kuwait from Iraqi occupation. |
Balkans Crisis | a series of ethnic conflicts, genocide, wars of independence, and insurgencies fought from 1991 to 1999/2001 in the former Yugoslavia; major foreign policy issue for President Bill Clinton and NATO. |
Dust Bowl | a period of severe dust storms that greatly damaged the ecology and agriculture of the American and Canadian prairies during the 1930s; caused by severe drought and a failure to apply dryland farming methods to prevent wind erosion |
Hurricane Katrina | Caused the failure of over 50 levees and flood walls in New Orleans leading to the displacement of thousands of people due to flooding |
Great Migration | the movement of 6 million African-Americans fleeing racial prejudice and violence in the rural Southern United States seeking economic opportunity in the urban Northeast, Midwest, and West that occurred between 1916 and 1970. |
Teapot Dome | A scandal in the Harding administration where Secretary of the Interior Albert Fall accepted bribes in exchange for leasing government-owned oil lands in Wyoming to private businessmen. |
Watergate | a major political scandal that occurred during the early 1970s following a break-in by five men at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters at the Watergate office complex and President Richard Nixon's attempt to cover up his involvement. |
Bill Clinton's impeachment | The president was charged with perjury and obstruction of justice in the investigation of a sexual harassment lawsuit but was not convicted by the Senate. |
presidential election of 2000 | George W. Bush ran against Al Gore and won the electoral college (but lost the popular vote) after a controversial Supreme Court decision to end a recount of votes in Florida. |
Bay of Pigs | Cuban exiles, organized and supported by the CIA, landed on the southern coast of Cuba in an attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro. The invasion failed, humiliated the United States and President Kennedy, and led Castro to seek nuclear weapons from the USSR. |
