Introduction and Vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Harbor | A body of water along a shore, deep enough for ships |
Cash Crop | Farm products grown for the purpose of sale to others, such as cotton, sugar or tobacco |
Parliament | Name for the British Congress |
Social Contract | When citizens follow the rules, the government must treat them fairly. |
Agrarian | Relating to farming |
Subsistence Farming | Growing only enough food to feed the immediate family; nothing left over to sell |
Primary Source | A document produced by someone who witnessed an event himself (diary) |
Secondary Source | A document written by somebody who was NOT THERE to witness an event (textbook) |
Migration | People moving from one place to another |
Plantation | Really big farm |
Mercantilism | Competition for colonies around the world because colonies provide resources that can make us rich (gold, lumber) |
