simile | compares two unlike things using "like" or "as" |
metaphor | compares two unlike things without using "like" or "as". Something is described very directly as though it were something else |
personification | a metaphor in which an inanimate object is given the characteristics of a living thing |
hyperbole | uses exaggeration for effect and is not meant to be taken literally |
alliteration | the repetition of initial consonant sounds to imitate a sound or to create a rhythmic effect. |
onomatopoeia | the use of words that imitate sounds - hiss, buzz, ring, crash, splash |
foot | a group of stresses in a rhythmic poem |
quatrain | 4 line stanza |
blank verse | poetry written with a definite rhythm, but no rhyme |
lyric poem | a poem expressing a poets personal thoughts and feelings, often in a vivid and musical language |
sonnet | a 14 line poem in iambic pentameter |
