What is a postpositive word? | A postpositive word cannot stand first in its clause. Ordinarily it stands second. Often in translation to English the postpositive word is properly considered first. |
When personal pronouns are unaccented how does their sense differ from the accented forms? | Unaccented forms of personal pronouns are unemphatic. The forms with accents are more emphatic in sense. |
What is a pronoun? | A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. |
What is an antecedent? | The antecedent is the noun for which a pronoun stands. |
How does a pronoun agree with its antecedent? | A pronoun agrees with its antecedent in gender and number. |
How do we determine what case to use for a pronoun? | The case of a pronoun is determined by its function in its own clause. |
When translating text including pronouns to English do we always keep the pronoun in the same gender? | Use the appropriate gender pronoun in English for the antecedent in English. For instance, though "river" is masculine in Greek, we would refer to the river as "it" in English. |
Why are personal pronouns rarely used in the nominative case in Greek? | Personal pronouns are rarely used in the nominative case in Greek because the verb indicates the person. The nominative pronoun is used for emphasis. |
What is an enclitic? | An enclitic is a word that goes so closely with the preceding word as to have normally no accent of its own. |
What happens to the accent of a word before an enclitic? | An acute accent on final syllable does not turn to a grave. If there is an acute on the antepenult or circumflex on the penult, it takes an additional acute accent on the ultima. If word before enclitic is a proclitic or enclitic, accent on the ultima. |
What happens to the accent of an enclitic that has its own accent? | An enclitic of two syllables retains its own accent when it follows a word that has an acute on the penult, if there is emphasis on the enclitic, or if the enclitic begins a clause. |
