enamel | the hardest material in your body, covers a tooth's crown. |
cementum | covers a tooth's root and helps anchor the tooth to the jawbone. |
dentin | a living material that makes up the majority of a tooth; under the enamel and cementum. |
pulp | a soft tissue that fills the center of each tooth. |
malocclusion | a condition in which the upper and lower teeth do not meet properly; improper bite. |
orthodontist | specialists who correct the position of jaws and teeth. |
halitosis | the condition of bad breath. |
plaque | bacteria that adhere to your teeth in a sticky film. |
tartar | a hardened material formed from plaque that has not been removed within 48 hours; irritates the gums. |
periodontal disease | gum disease caused by plaque and tartar. |
epidermis | the outer most layer of skin |
keratin | a protein dead skin cells contain that makes the skin tough and waterproof |
melanin | a dark pigment that gives skin some of its color |
dermis | the tough, elastic layer of skin that lies below the epidermis |
pore | a tiny opening in the skin |
follicles | structures that strands of hair grow in |
sebaceous glands | oil is secreted into follicles by these. |
melanoma | a deadly form of skin cancer |
acne | forms from excess oil and dead cells plugging a hair follicle |
dermatologist | a doctor who specializes in treating skin problems. |
eczema | a condition in which an area of skin becomes red, swollen, hot, and itchy. |
cornea | the clear layer of tissue that covers the front of the eye. |
pupil | the opening through which light enters the eye |
iris | circular structure that surrounds the pupil and regulates its size. |
lens | flexible structure that focuses light |
retina | a layer of cells that line the back of the eye |
optometrist | professional who provides eye and vision care. |
eardrum | a thin membrane at the end of the ear canal. It vibrates when sound vibrations strike it. |
cochlea | coiled tube filled with fluid |
semicircular canals | structures that send information to your brain about the movements of your head. |
Audiologists | professionals who are trained to evaluate hearing and treat hearing loss. |
