meaning | term |
foreshadowing | Clues that suggest events that have yet to occur. |
metaphor | Comparison of two things that are basically unlike but have some qualities in common. |
irony | Special kind of contrast between appearance and reality—usually one in which reality is the opposite of what it seems. |
personification | The giving of human qualities to an animal, object, or idea. |
alliteration | The repetition of a consonant sound. 1) Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers 2) cool cat |
allusion | Reference in literature to a familiar person or event. |
antagonist | Goes against the protagonist. |
autobiography | It is the author's account of his/her own life. |
biography | A story of a person's life by another person. |
mood | A feeling, in the reader, the author creates through his/her word choice. |
tone | The author's feeling toward his/her subject. |
theme | The lesson of a story. |
external conflict | man vs. man/man vs. nature |
internal conflict | man vs. self/man vs. society |
resolution | How a story ends |
narration | The point of view from which a story is told. |
climax | The point in a story when the protagonist faces his/her conflict |
onomatopoeia | Is the use of words that imitate sounds. |
hyperbole | Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. |
verbal irony | A person says or writes one thing and means another, or uses words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of the literal meaning. |
