Term | Definition |
Scale | The relationship between a distance on the map and the corresponding distance on the ground. |
Easting | The vertical co-ordinate. |
Northing | The horizontal co-ordinate. |
Cardinal | The 4 main points of a compass. |
Green | This colour indicates lowland areas up to 200 metres in altitude on a map. |
Brown | This colour represents upland areas on a map. |
Triangulation pillars | These can be found at the top of a hill or mountain. |
Contours | Lines on a map that join places of equal height. |
Spot heights | These give the exact height of a point. |
Steep | These slopes are indicated by contours that are tightly packed. |
Flat | Land that is indicated by an absence of contours. |
Cliffs | Indicated by contours that are ‘on top of one another’. |
Convex | This slope is steep at the bottom and gentle at the top. |
Concave | This slope is gentle at the bottom and steep at the top. |
Cross-section | A slice across and through a landscape to show its shape or profile. |
1 kilometre squared | The area of each square on a 1:50000 scale OS map. |
