Term | Definition |
DUR (Drug Utilization Review) warning | An alert or message generated by the pharmacy or insurance company computer system notifying the pharmacist of a potential drug safety or payment concern. |
formulary | A list of drugs approved by the insurance provider (retail setting) or formulary committee (hospital setting). |
prescription | An instruction from a medical practitioner that authorizes the issue of a drug or device to a patient. |
Signa | Latin for "to write". It indicates the directions for use and the administration route. |
DAW (Dispense As Written) | A code specifying that the brand name drug, not the generic, is to be dispensed. |
Schedule II Drugs | Drugs that have a high potential for abuse or addiction but have safe and accepted medical uses; they require special handling. |
over-the-counter (OTC) drugs | Meds that don't require a prescription but may be filled with one. |
high-alert medications | Meds that are known to cause significant harm if an error is made. |
tall man lettering | Uppercase letters used within a drug name to highlight the differences b/w look-alike drug names. |
days supply | The number of days the prescribed quantity of meds will last when taken as directed. |
auxiliary labels | Labels regarding specific warnings, foods, or meds to avoid, potential side effects, and other cautionary interactions; placed on the prescription container. |
unit dose package | A package containing a single dose of a med; each unit dose container is labeled with the drug name, strength, expiration date, and lot number. |
