artefact | a man made object |
carbon dating | a method used by archaeologists to date objects |
primary source | a source made or written at the time the event took place |
secondary source | a second hand source, written or made by someone who was not a witness to the event |
pre-history | this is the period of history before written records were kept |
rescue/salvage archaeology | when archaeologists carry out an emergency dig on a site that is in danger of being destroyed |
census | a survey of population numbers in a country at a particular time |
museum | a place where artefacts from the past are kept |
archive | a place where documents from the past are stored |
bias | a one-sided account of an event or person |
propaganda | information or rumours created and spread to influence people’s views |
prejudice | judge something before we have all of the information |
archaeology | the study of things people have left behind them |
stratigraphy | the study of layers of soil |
dendrochronology | studying tree rings to learn about a particular period |
crop marks | grass or crops will grow differently if there is an ancient building, ditch or wall buried beneath the ground |
trowel | main tool used for excavation |
conservation | when historic objects are protected and preserved so that they do not decay |
pollen analysis | the studying of pollen remains to tell archaeologists what was growing during the time period. |
geophysical survey | a survey of what's underneath the ground, like an x-ray of the ground |
test trench | a sample hole dug to judge whether it is worth excavating the whole site |
