congestive heart failure | heart muscle is not able to pump blood forcefully enough |
coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) | open heart surgery to reroute blood around occluded coronary artery |
coronary artery disease (CAD) | chronic heart disease caused by arteriosclerosis or atherosclerosis of coronary arteries |
deep vein thrombosis (DVT) | formation of blood clots in deep veins |
defibrillation | electrical shock to heart to convert arrhythmia back to normal |
Doppler ultrasonography | ultrasound to create moving image to evaluate blood flow |
electrocardiography | records electrical activity of the heart |
endarterectomy | surgical removal of inner lining of artery in order to remove plaques |
fibrillation | abnormal quivering or contractions of heart fibers |
heart murmur | abnormal heart sound |
heart transplantation | replacement of heart with donor |
heart valve prolapse | flaps of heart valve fail to shut tightly, allows blood to flow backward (regurgitation) |
stenosis | narrowing |
holter monitor | portable monitor to record heart and pulse activity |
hypertension (htn) | high blood pressure |
hypotension | low blood pressure |
implantable cardioverter defibrillator | Electrical device implanted in chest to shock heart if it goes into arrhythmia |
infarct | area of tissue necrosis that develops from ischemia |
intravascular thrombolytic therapy | treatment for clots occluding blood vessel |
myocardial infarction (MI) | infarct of heart muscle - heart attack |
myocardial ischemia | loss of blood supply to heart muscle tissue |

pacemaker | electrical device to stimulate contraction of heart muscle, treats bradycardia |
percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty | balloon catheter inserted into coronary artery and inflated to dilate narrow blood vessel |
peripheral vascular disease (PVD) | disease of blood vessel away from central region of body, typically legs |
sphygmomanometer | blood pressure cuff |
stent | tube placed within blood vessel to widen |
stress test | method for evaluating cardiovascular fitness |
tachycardia | fast heart rate |
transesophageal echocardiography | patient swallows ultrasound head to visualize internal cardiac structures |
varicose veins | swollen and distended veins, most commonly in legs |
venipuncture | puncture to vein to withdraw blood or inject medication or fluid |
