Term | Definition |
Lunar cycle | the different appearances of the moon from Earth throughout the month |
Moon | the only natural satellite of the Earth |
Revolve | to turn around a center point or line |
New moon | the moon when it is completely dark |
Full moon | the moon when it appears as a bright circle |
Waxing crescent moon | After the new moon, the sunlit portion is increasing, but less than half |
Waning crescent moon | Following the third quarter, wanes until the light is completely gone |
First quarter moon | happen when the moon is at a 90 degree angle with respect to the earth and sun (right side lit) |
Third quarter moon | happen when the moon is at a 90 degree angle with respect to the earth and sun (left side lit) |
Waxing Gibbous moon | After the first quarter, the sunlit portion is still increasing, but now it is more than half |
Waning Gibbous moon | After the full moon (maximum illumination), the light continually decreases |
Phase | the different ways the Moon looks from Earth over about a month. |
