Term | Definition |
Homeostasis | A state of equilibrium in an organism or a cell where the body temperature stays the same during extreme external temperatures. |
Joint | A place in the body where two parts of the skeleton are fitted together. (Ex: Knee, Shoulder, Elbow, Etc.) |
Cancellous bone | meshwork of the sponge-like tissue of mature adult bone |
Compact bone | The hard part surrounding the Cancellous bone to keep it solid and sturdy, and also to partially protect the bone from injuries. |
Cartilage | flexible connective tissue (Ex: Outer ear, End of Nose, Etc.) |
Ligament | a short band of tough, flexible, connective tissue that connects two bones or cartilages or holds together a joint. |
Tendon | a flexible but inelastic cord of strong tissue attaching a muscle to a bone. |
Red Marrow | The type of bone marrow you have when you are younger. |
Yellow Marrow | bone marrow containing fat; only adults and teenagers (certain bones) have this |
Skeletal Muscle | a muscle that is connected to the skeleton to form part of the mechanical system that moves the limbs and other parts of the body. |
Striated Muscle | muscle tissue in which the contractile fibrils in the cells are aligned in parallel bundles, so that their different regions form stripes visible in a microscope. |
Smooth Muscle | muscle tissue in which the contractile fibrils are not highly ordered, occurring in the gut and other internal organs and not under voluntary control. |
Cardiac Muscle | the muscular tissue of the heart. |
Integumentary System | organ system that protects the body from various kinds of damage, such as loss of water or abrasion from outside. The system comprises the skin and its appendages (including hair, scales, feathers, hooves, and nails). |
Epidermis | the outer layer of cells covering an organism, in particular. |
Dermis | the thick layer of living tissue below the epidermis that forms the true skin, containing blood capillaries, nerve endings, sweat glands, hair follicles, and other structures. |
Melanin | a dark brown to black pigment occurring in the hair, skin, and iris of the eye in people and animals. It is responsible for tanning of skin exposed to sunlight. |
Follicle | a small secretory cavity, sac, or gland, in particular. |
