cell membrane | surrounds the cell; controls the movement of materials into and out of the cell |
cytoplasm | the watery fluid that contains the organelles of the cell |
mitochondrion | provides the cell with energy |
cell respiration | the process by which food and oxygen are converted to energy, carbon dioxide, and water. |
vacuole | a storage area for food and water |
chloroplast | organelle that contains the green pigment chlorophyll used in photosynthesis |
chlorophyll | a green pigment |
photosynthesis | the process by which plants make sugar and oxygen using light, water, and carbon dioxide |
cell wall | protects and supports the plant cell |
compound light microscope | a microscope that has more than one lens and uses light transmitted to your eye to form an image |
field of view | the circle of light you see when you look through a microscope |
diameter | the length of the line through the middle of a circle from one side to the other |
ratio | a comparison of two numbers |
bacteria | the most common form of one-celled organisms |
host | an organism that harbors (provides food and a place to stay) for another organism, such as a virus |
microbe | an organism that can be seen only through a microscope |
infectious agent | something that can get inside your body, multiply, and cause disease |
droplet transmission | a way that an infectious disease can be transmitted. Droplets containing an infectious agent are released into the air when an infected person sneezes, coughs, talks, or exhales. |
