Question | Answer |
Equation | An expression showing the equality of 2 quantities such as 2 +3 = 5 or 4x + 2 = 14 |
Inverse operation | Inverse operations are opposite operations. Addition is the opposite of subtraction; division is the opposite of multiplication, and so on. |
Distributive property | Multiplying each term inside the parentheses with the term outside of the parentheses. |
variable | A symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y. Example: in x + 2 = 6, x is the variable. |
addition property of equality | States that if the same amount is added to both sides of an equation, then the equality is still true. |
Subtraction property of equality | States that when both sides of an equation have the same number subtracted from them, the remaining expressions are still equal. For example: If 5 = 5, then 5 - 2 = 5 - 2. |
Multiplication property of equality | States that when both sides of an equation are multiplied by the same number, the remaining expressions are still equal. For example: If 5 = 5, then 5 x 2 = 5 x 2. |
Division property of equality | States that if you divide both sides of an equation by the same nonzero number, the sides remain equal. |
like terms | Terms that have the exact same variables and exponents, but they can have different coefficients. 6x, 52x, -3x---Not 7y |
volume | Volume is the measure of the amount of space inside of a solid figure, like a cube, ball, cylinder or pyramid. V= l x w x h |
perimeter | the total distance around the edge of the figure. |
literal equation | An equation that has 2 or more variables and |
expression | A mathematical phrase that can contain ordinary numbers, variables (like x or y) and operators such as add, subtract, multiply, and divide. It does not have an equal sign |
solve | find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression. |
evaluate | find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression. |
