Cortex | the wrinkly part on top of the brain |
Hemisphere | a half of a sphere when it is cut into two equal parts horizantally or vertically |
Cerebellum | the part of the brain involved with balance and coordination |
Cerebrum | the larger part oh the brain, it is involved with movement and your senses, learn think and remember |
Medulla | the part of the brain that controls your organs and your heart, it is set inside of the skull |
Spinal Cord | the cord of nervous tissue that extends from the brain to the vertebral canal. It carries signals to and from the brain |
Pituitary Gland | a small, oval gland called the Master Gland because it controls all of the other glands |
PNS | PNS=Peripheral Nervous System. It is made up of all of the other nerves in your body that aren't in the CNS |
CNS | CNS=Central Nervous System. It is made up of the brain and the spinal cord |
Autonomic System | made up of the hypothalamus. It controls and moniters conditions of the body, emotions, and short term memory |
Hypothalamus | controls blood pressure, heart rate, body temperatures, hunger, and thirst |
Thalamus | takes all incoming senses except for the sense of smell then sends them to the cerebrum to be interpreted |
Amygdala | major role with your motions, fear, pleasure, and phobias |
Neuron | bundles of thousands of nerve cells |
Motor Neuron | sends impulses to the muscles and glands in your body |
Sensory Neuron | picks up the stimuli from either internal or external environments then converts the stimuli to an impulse and carries impulse up to brain |
Interneuron | transfers incoming sensory impulse to the outgoing motor impulse, found in brain and spinal cord |
Dendrite | recieves the impulses and sends them to the cell body |
Axon | carries the impulses away from the cell body to other parts and other cells |
Cell Body | contains the nucleus and the organelles |
Synaptic Gap | the space between two nerve cells |
Neurotransmitter | special chemicals released to carry a message |
Stimulus | activates impulses |
Homeostatis | the ability of an organism to keep conditions inside it's body the same even though conditions in the same environment may change |
Reflex | a response to a sense |
Unconditioned Reflex | you are born with it |
Conditioned Reflex | you learn it when you are living |
Hormones | a chemical that creates change |
Thyroid Gland | found in the throat, controls your metabolism |
Parathyroid Gland | on the thyroid, controls the amount of phosphate and calcium in blood |
Adrenal Gland | top of kidneys, makes adrenaline, controls amount of salt in blood |
Pancreas | behind stomach, creates insulin |
