Term | Definition |
Outer Core | A layer of molten metal surrounding the inner core. |
Earthquake | the shaking and trembling that result from movments of rock beneath Earth's surface. |
Fault | Breaks in Earth's crust where rocks have slipped past each other. |
Seismogram | The pattern of lines recorded by a seismograph. |
Seismograph | An instrument that records and measures an earthquake's seismic waves. |
Epicenter | The point on the surface directly above the focus is called the epicenter |
Focus | The area beneath Earth's surface where rock that was under stress begins to break or move. |
Seismic waves | Vibrations that carry energy released during an earthquake. |
Magma | Molten material that has not reached the Earth's surface. |
Lava | Molten material that has reached Earth's surface. |
Hot Spots | When magma erupts through the crust and reaches the surface. |
Divergent boundary | Plates that move apart or diverge. |
Convergent boundary | Plates that come together or converge |
Transform boundary | Plates that slip past each other in opposite directions. |
Plates | The earth's lithosphere broken into uneven pieces. |
Subduction | The process by which the ocean floor sinks beneath a deep-ocean trench and back into the mantle again |
Sea-floor spreading | A process where mid-ocean ridges continally add new material to the ocean floor. |
Rift Valley | Where pieces of Earth's crust diverge on land, a deep valley called forms. |
Ring of Fire | A major belt of volcano's that surrounds the Pacific Plate. |
Mineral | A natuarly occuring solid that can form by inorganic prosses has a crystal structure and a definite chemical compisition. |
Hardness | How you identify a mineral see if it can be scrached by another mineral Can be found out with moh's hardness scale |
Luster | How light reflects off a mineral |
Streak | The color of the mineral's powder. |
Cleavage | Splits along flat surface |
Fracture | Patterns it makes when it breaks |
