Natural resources | natural materials that humans use for some purpose, whether it be to supply a need or just to satisfy a want; can be renewable or nonrenewable |
Renewable resources | can be replaced by nature at a faster rate than humans can use or consume them |
Nonrenewable resources | cannot be replaced by nature at a faster rate than humans can use or consume them |
Industrial Revolution | a rapid, major change in economy marked by the development and use of power-driven machinery |
fossil fuels | nonrenewable resources, including coal, crude oil, and natural gas; made from the ancient remains of plants and marine organisms |
crude oil | fossil fuel made from ancient marine organisms, also known as petroleum; naturally liquid in form, refined and used in manufacturing, and to create products such as gasoline, automobile oil, crayons, wax, etc. |
natural gas | fossil fuel made from ancient marine organisms, naturally found as a flammable gas, used for heating |
coal | solid fossil fuel made from ancient plants, used mostly to fuel electrical power plants |
uranium | nonrenewable fuel source for nuclear power (NOT a fossil fuel) |
