Question | Answer |
What is a cell? | The basic unit of structure and function in living things. |
What is an organism? | A living thing. |
What is an organ system? | A group of organs that work together to perform a specific job. |
What is an organ? | A group of tissues that work together to accomplish the same goal. |
What are tissues? | A group of cells that work together to accomplish the same goal. |
List the levels of organization from smallest to largest. | Cell, Tissue, Organ, Organ System, Organism |
Exoskeleton | Rigid outer covering of an organism; doesn't grow with organism |
Endoskeleton | Internal skeleton made of bone |
Ligament | Connects bone to bone |
Tendon | Connects bone to muscle |
Heart | Double pump that pumps blood throughout the body |
Arteries | Pump blood away from the heart |
Veins | Pump blood to the heart |
Capillaries | Thin walled blood vessels |
Trachea | windpipe that passes between larynx and bronchi |
Bronchi | 2 tubes that split off trachea and enter lungs |
Lungs | organ where carbon dioxide is exchanged for oxygen |
Alveoli | Air sacs in lungs where carbon dioxide leaves the blood and oxygen enters the bloodstream |
Skeletal System Functions | * provide structure and support * allow movement * protects tissues and organs * produces blood cells |
Muscular System Functions | * Moves bones * Moves food through digestive tract * Makes heart beat |
Nervous System Functions | * Sends and receives information about activities within the body * Senses and responds to environment * Controls coordination of body * Controls 5 senses |
Nervous system of Jellyfish | Nervenet |
Nervous system of Octopus | Sense organ |
Octopus locomotion | jet propulsion |
Crayfish locomotion | crawl |
Bird locomotion | fly |
Digestive System Function | * Breaks down food into simpler substances for use by the body's cells |
Organs that are a part of the digestive system | mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus |
Circulatory system function | * Carries food and oxygen to body cells and carries away carbon dioxide and other waste |
Respiratory system function | * bring oxygen into the body * get rid of carbon dioxide from the body |
Name 3 ways the body gets rid of waste | * exhale carbon dioxide * create urine by filtering the blood * digestive system produces solid waste |
How does the body bring nutrients to all parts of the body? | The digestive system breaks down food and the nutrients from the food are absorbed into the blood stream in the small intestine. From there the nutrients enter the circulatory system where they are brought all over the body. |
How do systems work together to help an organism move? | The skeletal, muscular and nervous systems work together to help organisms move. The brain sends signals to the muscles to contract. The muscles contract and pull on bones to create movement. |
How do systems work together to protect the body? | Skeletal system makes white blood cells used by immune system to fight infection. Immune also produces antibodies. Integumentary protects from injury and predators. Respiratory prevents dirt from getting into lungs. |
Integumentary system functions | * Protects body from infection * Prevent water loss * Regulates body temperature |
Immune system functions | * Defend body against disease causing organisms * Removes dead or damaged cells * Produce antibodies to prevent infection |
How do different types of animals use a skin adaptation to help them escape predators? | Camouflage or Poisonous skin |
How does the body bring oxygen to all parts of the body? | The heart pumps oxygen poor blood to the lungs where it enters into the alveoli and exchanges CO2 for O2. The oxygen then goes into the red blood cells (circulatory system) and are pumped back to the heart. The heart pumps blood all over the body. |
Give three examples of animal behaviors that increase the chances of animal reproduction | Nest building, Herding animals, Vocalization, Color plumage |
Give three examples of plant structures that increase the probability of plant reproduction | Bright colored flowers, Nectar, Odor to attract insects, Hard shell on nuts for squirrels |
