Term | Definition |
Topographic map | A type of map characterized by large-scale detail and quantitative representation of relief, using contour lines but, historically, using a variety of methods. |
Contour interval | The vertical distance between the elevations represented by adjacent contour lines on a map |
Gradient | The change in elevation divided by the distance |
Elevation | height above a given level, especially sea level. |
Cross section | Shows the shape of the feature viewed from the side as if cut through with a knife; constructed using the contour lines on a topographic map |
Topographic profile | A cross sectional view along a line drawn through a portion of a topographic map. In other words, if you could slice through a portion of the earth, pull away one half, and look at it from the side, the surface would be it |
