absorb | to soak up, like a sponge |
color spectrum | a continuous band of colors formed when white light is passed through a prism |
electromagnet spectrum | the range of light waves that people can't see, such as radio waves and gamma waves |
light | a form of energy that allows us to see; used by plants to make food |
light ray | a tiny pocket of light that shoots out in a straight line |
luminous | having the ability to give off light energy |
medium | the substance through which a wave, such as light, travels |
opaque | not allowing light to pass through |
reflect | a light ray bouncing off a surface |
refraction | to change in direction when passing from one medium to another; light does this, for example, when it passes between air and water or between air and glass |
translucent | allowing only some light to pass through |
transmission | the movement of light through a medium |
transparent | allowing light to pass through |
visible spectrum | the wavelength of light that people can see |
wavelength | the distance from the top of on wave to the top of the next wave |
