Term | Definition |
DATA | are values associated with a trait or property that help distinguish the occurrences of something |
DATA | is the set of individual values associated with a variable. |
DATUM | is the singular form of data. It refers to a single data point or observation. |
DATA | is a set or collection of values. It is the plural form of data. |
VARIABLE | is a characteristic of an item or individual. |
OPERATIONAL DEFINITION | must have one for each variable used. An operational definition is a commonly understood definition. |
OPERATIONAL DEFINITION | allows all associated with the analysis to understand what the variable represents and what its possible values are. |
TYPES OF VARIABLES | categorical and numerical. |
CATEGORICAL VARIABLES | qualitative variables – have values that can only be placed into categories. |
NUMERICAL VARIABLES | quantitative variables – have values representing quantitites. |
Types of Numerical Variables | discrete and continuous |
DISCRETE Numerical Variables | have numerical values arising from the counting process. The numerical values are whole numbers. |
CONTINUOUS Numerical Variables | have numerical values arising from a measuring process. The response takes on any value within a continuum or interval. |
POPULATION | consists of all the items or individuals about which you want to reach conclusions. |
SAMPLE | is a portion of a population selected for analysis. |
PARAMETER | is a measure that describes a characteristic of a population. |
STATISTIC | is a measure that describes a characteristic of a sample. |
