Term | Definition |
Abiotic | the nonliving components of an ecosystem |
Acid rain | rain, snow or hail that contains acids formed from sulphur and nitrogen-containing pollutants in the atmosphere |
Adaptation | special strutures and behaviours that help an organism to succeed in its ecosystem |
Biodegradable | products made from things that were once living and that can be broken down by decomposers |
Biological Amplification | the process that results in increasing concentrations of a harmful chemical at each higher level of a food chain |
Biome Bioshphere | a collection of related ecosystem |
Biotic | living things that effect the environment |
Carbon cycle | a matter cycle for carbon as it used reused in respiration and photosynthesis |
Carnivore | a consumer that eats other animals |
Chlorophyll | a green substance found in plants; used to capture and store radiant energy from the sun |
Community | all of the organisms in an ecosystem |
Consumer | a organisms that cannot make its own food and must eat other organisms |
Decompose | to break down materals into smaller peices or molecules into smaller molecules, so they can be reused in an ecosystem |
Decomposer | an ecological niche; an organism that breaks down materails so they can be reused ina ecosystem |
Ecological Niche | the way of life or the role of the organism in an ecological |
Ecological Pyramid | is a graphical way to show the effects of loss of energy |
Ecology | the study of the relationships among living things and between living things and there environment |
Ecosystem | all of the relationships among living things in a community and their interactions with the abiotic factors in their environment |
Food Chain | an organizing device that show a feeding pathway, made up of several organisms |
Food Web | an organizing system made up of many intersecting food chains |
Herbivore | a consumer that eats only plants |
Leaching | a process in witch water seeps downward through soil or other materails, dissolving chemicals and carrying them into lower layers |
Matter cycle | a description of how matter is used and reused by living things |
Nutrient | a chemical that is essential for the growth of living things |
Organism | a single living thing |
Pesticide | chemicals designed to reduced the populations of unwanted organisms, both plants and animals |
Photosynthesis | the process plants used to make sugers out of carbon dioxide and water using radiant energy from the sun; releases oxygen |
Population | the number of organisms of the same species living in a community |
Primary Succession | succession that occurs in an area where ther was no community before; ends when a climax ecosystem is emblished |
Prodcer | an organism that can make its own food |
Recycle | means to reuse something |
Respiration | the process used by living things to break down sugers for the energy stored in them; uses oxyen and releases carbon dioxide and water |
Secondary Succession | succession that occurs after th partial or complete destruction of a community; the damaged community is replaced by another or by a seriess of others communites until a stable community is restablished |
Succession | a natural process in witch the dominant species in a ecosystem are gradually replace by others |
Water Cycle | the cycle that collects, purifies, and redistributes th earth's water; driven by energy form the sun |
