Question | Answer |
Law of Conservation of Mass | a fundamental principle of classical physics that matter cannot be created or destroyed in an isolated system |
Physical Change | a change from one state (solid or liquid or gas) to another without a change in chemical composition |
Chemical Change | a usually irreversible chemical reaction involving the rearrangement of the atoms of one or more substances and a change in their chemical properties or composition, resulting in the formation of at least one new substance |
Element | a process in which one or more substances are changed into one or more different substances. Is composed of atoms that have the same atomic number |
Chemical Formula | a representation of a substance using symbols for its constituent elements |
Element (Diatomic) Molecule | molecules composed only of two atoms, of either the same or different chemical elements |
Compound Molecule | a compound made of 2 or more nonmetal elements; a compound held together by covalent bonds |
Chemical Equation | a representation of a chemical reaction using symbols of the elements to indicate the amount of substance, usually in moles, of each reactant and product |
Chemical Reaction | a process that involves changes in the structure and energy content of atoms, molecules, or ions but not their nuclei |
Reactants (in a chemical equation) | They are on the left side of the equation with an arrow pointing to the substances being formed on the right side of the equation (the products) |
Products (in a chemical equation) | a substance that is formed as the result of a chemical reaction. |
Coefficient (in a chemical equation) | the absolute values of the stoichiometric numbers |
Subscript (in a chemical equation0 | numbers used to tell you how many atoms of an element are present in the equation |
Ionic Compound | a chemical compound in which ions are held together in a lattice structure by ionic bonds |
Covalent Compound | a molecule formed by covalent bonds, in which the atoms share one or more pairs of valence electrons |
Metallic Compound | a compound that contains one or more metal elements |
Synthesis | The combining of separate elements or substances to form a coherent whole |
Decomposition | Separation into constituents by chemical reaction |
Single Replacement | A chemical reaction in which an element replaces one element in a compound |
Double Replacement | a chemical reaction where two reactant ionic compounds exchange ions to form two new product compounds with the same ions |
