What is a motion segment?   A functional unit made up of 2 adjacent articulating surfaces, and the connecting tissues binding them together.

Describe counter-motion.   When movement in a motion segment occurs, the 2 articulating surfaces will either rotate about an axis, or translate along an axis, or both, in opposite directions.

What is absolute motion?   Either one member of the motion segment, or the other, or both may actually be displaced in relation to its original position in space.

What is relative motion in terms of displacement?   While only 1 member of a motion segment may be displaced in relation to its original position, the other member of the motion segment, while remaining stationary has displaced relative to the moving member in an opposite direction.

What is relative motion in terms of normal motion?   Whenever any movement occurs w/in a motion segment, the 2 members of the motion segment are moving in relative motion to each other.

Why is there a lecture exam in this class?   Who knows? This information isn't on boards and it's a lab class!!! >:(

How is movement named in the spine?   In the vertebral column, while absolute motion may be occurring in either vertebra of a motion segment, the movement is always named for the motion of the superior vertebra of the spinal motion segment.

Spinal movements are defined by...(3)   1. Motion of the superior vertebra or a spinal motion segment. 2. Torso or head movement. 3. Vertebral body motion.

Where will maximum motion be produced when inducing motion in the spine?   At the motion segment where maximum counter-rotation occurs.

How is maximum counter-rotation achieved at a specific motion segment?   The 2 vertebrae of the motion segment must move relatively opposite directions, regardless of which member of the motion segment is actually contacted.

In ASSISTED thrust, what do you contact?   The SUPERIOR vertebra of a motion segment.

Where does motion occur in ASSISTED thrust?   In the joints BELOW the vertebra you are contacting.

In what direction do you apply the ASSISTED thrust?   SAME direction as TORSO movement.

In RESISTED thrust, what do you contact?   The INFERIOR vertebra of a motion segment.

Where does motion occur in RESISTED thrust?   In the joints ABOVE the vertebra you are contacting.

In what direction do you apply the RESISTED thrust?   Direction OPPOSITE of TORSO movement. This produces a relative motion in the superior vertebra that is in the same direction as the torso.

When are the terms assisted and resisted not used?   Where a specific spinal segment is not contacted (interspinous space) or if both members of the motion segment are contacted (block pull). All other movement can be described as assisted resisted...

If you're doing a mam push as a resisted procedure, which side is up, what is contacted and where does counter-movement occur?   Restricted side up; upside mamillary process of inferior member of motion segment; movement occurs above contact point

If you are doing a spinous push for lumbar rotation (assisted), which side is up, what is contacted and where does counter-movement occur?   Restricted side up; Upside of superior member of motion segment; movement occurs below contact point.

If you are doing a 2 finger spinous pull for lumbar rotation (resisted), which side is up, what is contacted and where does counter-movement occur?   Restricted side up; Downside of inferior member of motion segment; movement occurs above contact point.

If you're doing a pisiform sacral groove push for L/S rotation (resisted), which side is up, what is contacted and where does counter-movement occur?   Restricted side up; Upside sacral groove/inferior member of L/S motion segment; movement occurs above contact point.
