Chapter 2 Section 1
Help!
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Describe two ways rocks have been used by humans. | 1. Tools: arrowheads, spears, knives.
2. Buildings, monuments, roads using slate, marble, etc.
🗑
| What is erosion? | When wind, water, ice, or gravity transports soil and sediment from one place to another.
🗑
| Explain deposition. | When sediment moved by erosion is dropped somewhere and comes to a rest.
🗑
| What is uplift? | When rocks in the Earth are moved to the Earth's surface and then weathering, erosion, and deposition begin.
🗑
| How is Sedimentary Rock formed? | Sediment erodes from mountains, hills, etc and are washed down by the river into the ocean. Over time, thick layers form on the ocean floor and eventually they are compacted and cemented together to form Sedimentary Rock.
🗑
| Explain how Metamorphic Rock is formed. | Large pieces of the Earth collide so some rock is forced downward. Heat and Pressure is applied on the Sedimentary Rock and is then changed into Metamorphic Rock.
🗑
| How is Igneous Rock formed? | Magma rises close to the Earth's surface and then cools there. It then solidifies and forms Igneous Rock.
🗑
| List two characteristics of rock that are used to help classify it. | Composition: chemical make-up of a rock
Texture: Shape, size of a rock (fine-, medium-, coarse-grained)
🗑
| Name four processes that change rock inside the Earth. | Compactation and cementation, Metamorphis, Melting, and Cooling.

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.
To hide a column, click on the column name.
To hide the entire table, click on the "Hide All" button.
You may also shuffle the rows of the table by clicking on the "Shuffle" button.
Or sort by any of the columns using the down arrow next to any column heading.
