Gr 10 Ontario Climate Change

        Help!

Question
Answer
Climate   the average weather of an area, determined by temperature and precipitation
🗑
Microclimate   a small area with a different climate than the surrounding area
🗑
El Niño   the warming of the western Pacific ocean that causes droughts in Australia and floods in South America
🗑
Gulf Stream   is a powerful, warm, and swift Atlantic ocean current that originates at the tip of Florida, and follows the eastern coastlines of the United States and Newfoundland before crossing the Atlantic Ocean.
🗑
Global Warming   refers to the gradual increase in the Earth’s atmosphere and surface temperature.
🗑
Greenhouse Gases   gases in the atmosphere that absorb heat and send it back to Earth’s surface making the world warmer
🗑
Greenhouse Effect   the trapping of heat inside the earth’s atmosphere due to gases that absorb long-wave radiation emitted by the Earth (energy originally from sun).
🗑
Glacier   a large mass of slow moving ice; can be larger than a city and taller than a sky scrapper
🗑
Carbon Dioxide   one of the main greenhouse gases, it is released from the burning of fossil fuels. Plants also absorb it. CO2 has the greatest influence on GNE because it is much more abundant than the other two gases.
🗑
Methane   one of the main greenhouse gases, it is released from livestock
🗑
E.P.A   Environmental Protection Agency
🗑
Compost   A mixture of decomposing organic matter, used to improve the physical properties of the soil
🗑
Landfill   where garbage is deposited and then buried.
🗑
Greenhouse Gases   Gases that absorb the infrared radiation (heat) from the sun and trap the heat in our atmosphere. ie. Carbon dioxide, Methane, water vapour, nitrous oxide.
🗑
Thermal energy transfer   Radiation - energy transfer by the sun's radiant energy (electromagnetic waves) Conduction - heat transfer when a warm object touches a cooler one. Convection - heat transfer due to the movement of air or water current
🗑
Carbon Sink   A forest, ocean, or other natural environment viewed in terms of its ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
🗑
Climate Change   includes global warming and everything else that increasing greenhouse gas amounts will affect.
🗑

Review the information in the table. When you are ready to quiz yourself you can hide individual columns or the entire table. Then you can click on the empty cells to reveal the answer. Try to recall what will be displayed before clicking the empty cell.
