genetics   a field in biology used to study how characteristics are transmitted to offspring.  
trait   A genetically determined characteristic.  
heredity   Transmission of characteristics from parent to offspring.  
pollination   Transferring pollen from male flower parts to female flower parts.  
self-pollination   pollen transfer from male to female flower part on the same flower or on the same plant.  
cross-pollination   Transferring pollen from male flower to female flower from two different plants.  
recessive   A trait that is masked.  
true-breeding   A pure bred organism.  
P generation   The first generation. In Mendel’s case it was the cross of the true-breeding plants.  
allele   An alternate form of a gene.  
F1 generation   The offspring of the P generation.  
dominant   The trait that masks others.  
F2 generation   The product of the F1generation.  
law of segregation   Separation of the alleles in the formation of gametes.  
molecular biology   The study of the structure and function of chromosomes and genes.
